Chapter 8

Obsidian Spirits

Kechara appeared in the darkness, facing the gaping mouth of the cave. She makes for the entrance when suddenly, she feels a force hold her in place. She struggles to push forward and is hurled back three meters from whence she came.

A spell is cast. Before her in the gloom is the outline of a huge monster. It becomes clearer as she moves closer to it. A huge stone sentinel stands guard before the cave, cloaked in invisibility.

She draws her weapon from the confines of her robe, a blade made of mithril with a diamond edge that can slice through the hardest rock. The winds pick up and swirl around her, causing the winds to howl like a pack of wolves.

She begins chanting in the elven tongue. "Ancestors of Chandre, guide my blade and help me vanquish this monster."

She advances towards the stone sentinel, weapon in hand, ready to strike. With a wave of her hand, she creates a sparkle of light just above the monster's blind spot, causing it to switch its gaze.

Kechara descends upon the hapless creature, slicing it in two. The top half falls off backward as it tries to reach for the lights. Its base still stands there. She creates a ball of water and directs it towards what's left standing, causing it to disintegrate rapidly.

With the immediate threat gone, she replaces her weapon and enters the cave. The gloom within looks foreboding, but her keen elven eyes allow her to see when others cannot. Three paths lay before her and she must choose which path to take, knowing very well that the wrong choice will spell doom.

She remembers seeing this in a dream. She recalls it, and quickly makes her way to the end of this maze. She speaks softly in the elvish tongue, deciphering the riddle placed on the door to open it. Once past the door, she is greeted with a small chamber decorated to look like a bedroom.

The bed lies along the far wall and a table with two chairs lie in the middle of the room. An ethereal form sits in one of the chairs. The figure looks up and notices the young elven maiden staring at him. "Greetings," he says in a grim and monotonous voice. "That is all you receive, for no one has ever left here alive." A small giggling welled up from his throat that turned into an insane laugh.

Kechara brings her hands close together in front of her, finger tips touching, and begins to chant. The spirit continues to laugh hysterically. He doesn't notice that pieces of ice are forming in the air around him. Too late he notices and before he knows it, he is engulfed in a block of ice.

In the blink of an eye, Kechara grasps her weapon and strikes at the spirit trapped in ice and shatters the block, causing it to break into millions of tiny pieces, thus destroying the undead. "And they say you can't kill what's already dead," she says to herself. On the table she sees a pendant. She picks it up and sees an obsidian jewel surrounded by jade. The sparkle dances in her eye.

In that instant, she receives a vision of a cave. Its entrance high above the land at the top of a stone wall. She braces herself against the table until the vision is over, then steadies herself and leaves the chambers in search of this new place, vanishing with but a thought.
