Chapter 7

Separate Lives

Charjer looked at everyone as they gathered around and thought for a minute before speaking. Gohan got up again and went back outside and everyone watched him leave.

"Well," Charjer started. "We grew up together in the town of Phexton. There was this awfully large man there by the name of Boran. He was really nice. He guarded this gate down there in the village that only he's been through. Anyway, he was a nice person. Always playing games with us when we were little. He was our first teacher you could say.

"But, I'm getting ahead of myself. I first met Gohan while walking around the village. He was chasing a squirrel when it zipped past me. He ran into me, knocking us both down. I was ten, he was nine. I joined him in his chase after the squirrel." Smirk giggled. "Yeah, I know, it sounds dumb. But hey, we were still kids. We never got that squirrel." Gohan walked back in with some fruit and plopped down next to Smirk, causing the entire bench to lift up and fall down with a thud, rocking all its passengers. They complained loudly at Gohan and a few that were close to him gave him a slap.

Charjer cleared his throat and continued. "Then we started hanging around Boran during the waking hours. He was a gate guard and a legendary warrior. He was our first teacher you could say. We stayed there for another 10 years before he left the village. He always wanted more from life. He wanted to go on an adventure. But, I wasn't ready to leave yet. I wanted to improve my skills in weaponry, so I stayed behind for another year after he had left.

"When I did leave, I journeyed west through lands I had never been to and marveled at the new things. One of the places I had gone to was this island called Chandre. It's very colorful there and the sun shines so brightly. Everyone there was nice, except for the guards. Guards are always stuck up.

"Well, anyway, my travels eventually brought me here. I read a scroll an elf gave me and the next thing I knew, I was on a cloud. And, here I am."

"Yes indeed," boomed Ate, giving Charjer a pat on the back. "Oooohhh, time for lunch." Ate stood up and grabbed a pot of stew from the hearth a few meters away and placed in the middle of the table. "Dig in guys," he said while smiling happily.

"Dumb barbarian," Cueball muttered. "Always thinking about food." Everyone laughed at his comment.
