Chapter 2

Assemblage

The doorway to the building lies open and looks to be inhabited by people. Charjer steps through the open doorway and sees a woman in a large white gown that looks like she's floating on thin air across the room. The room itself is quite large with beds lined up in a row on one side. Some are filled with sick patients with little women tending to them.

Near the entrace, he sees a plaque. He reads it to himself. "Little Sisters of Mercy First Aid Station."

"Hobbits," he says quietly to himself, not meaning any disrespect. A few of them notice him walking in and wave to him. Charjer waves back, trying to be polite.

The wary traveler moves towards the far end of the room, past a few dining tables. He passes by one pair who seem to be fighting. One is a large person, standing, who is dressed in fur made from what looks like what used to be a gigantic werewolf and boots that are made from solid metal. A large black scimitar lay on the table next to where he is standing.

"I'm telling you, no it isn't!" exclaimed the one standing. He was arguing with a person sitting down. The one sitting was dressed in a white robe that seemed to flow with his every movement.

"And I'm telling you yes, it is!" he yelled back.

Charjer noticed a person in the shadows at the other end of the same table before a sigh escaped her lips. "Those idiots, still fighting over that game again," she muttered while playing with her tiny dagger. She looked up and noticed the stranger for the first time.

"Who are you?" she asks, causing the two men to stop arguing and look in the direction she was.

Charjer looked at everyone and realized she was talking to him. He cleared his throat. "Oh, my name is Charjer. I'm new here." He placed his hand out to the large man, awaiting a handshake.

The large man looked down at his hand, then shook with laughter. "Ha ha, a ranger, eh?" He grasped Charjer's hand and gave him a pat on the back. "My name is Ate. I'm a Barbarian. This is my best friend Cueball, a cleric," he said, pointing to the man sitting down. Motioning to the person in the back, he says, "And that there in the back that hides and twitches in fear occasionally is Smirk. She's a thief. Don't worry, we trust her. Helped us out many a time she has."

Charjer nodded. "Nice to meet you all."

"Please, have a seat," said Cueball, motioning to the seat across of him. Charjer sat down cautiously as they were still new to him. "Join us in a meal. We were just about to eat something while we waited for our friends to arrive." Charjer nodded in agreement.

Just as they began to eat, a commotion was heard coming from outside.

"Well, that wasn't my fault," said one person very calmly. "You should have been more careful when you walked through that area. You are a ranger."

"Okay, just shut up about it already," shouted the other person.

They could be seen now at the doorway as they walked in. "Ahhhh, here they are," said Cueball, looking towards the entrance. "Ryoga, what took so long?"

Cueball was talking to the person that was dressed in a long black gown decorated with a red dragon that spun its way from the front to the back of the garment. "We would have been here sooner if Gohan hadn't pissed off some trolls," he replied.

"Hey, I already said, that wasn't my fault!" Gohan retorted, obviously peeved. He was still at the doorway as Ryoga walked towards the group.

"Tell us," said Ate. "This oughta be interesting." Cueball and Smirk giggled. Charjer looked confused.

"Gohan?" he said questioningly.

"Charjer?" he gasped. "Shit man, been a long time. How you been?"

"Okay. How about you?"

Gohan sighed. "Been better."

"Yeah, I'll say," Ryoga butted in. Everyone giggled as they finally saw what they meant. Gohan walked in slowly and they all saw he was covered in shit.

As Ryoga sat down, Cueball tapped him on his shoulder and said, "Oh, you gotta tell us about this one." Smirk giggled as Gohan rolled his eyes and covered his face in embarassment.

Ryoga thought for a moment before replying, "Okay. But dinner first. I'm starving."
