Chapter 6

The Hidden Path

It was nearing midnight as the group made their way to the gates of Lindon. They decided to rest outside until daybreak, when the gates would be open, taking shelter in a small grove to the south of the gate.

As they set up camp, Charjer looked at the surroundings and saw a sort of shadowy like presence to his left that vanished in the blink of an eye. Ryoga looked over at Charjer and saw him moving to the area where he had last seen the mysterious object.

"Charjer. What are you looking for?"

"I'm not sure," he responded. He thought for a minute before saying, "That spell you cast on us earlier. So we could see each other even though we were invisible."

"What about it?"

"Could you cast it once more?" requested Charjer. Ryoga nodded and began his chanting.

Charjer looked back towards the group and then back to where he had been searching and saw the same shape, only, it was much larger this time. He put his hand out to touch it only to find that it went right through. Everyone else had seen it by this time and had moved to where he was standing.

"What is it?" asked Smirk who moved up to sniff at it. Charjer shrugged.

On a whim, he decided to try stepping through it. Everyone gasped as he disappeared from view. A few seconds later, he popped his head back through. "Guys, it's some sort of invisible path. C'mon." One by one, they all walked through.

They appeared in a secluded glen, next to a small stream. A group of bandits jumped out of some nearby brush and surrounded them. One spoke.

"Trespassers, my name is Auster. State your purpose."

Ryoga stepped forward. "My name is Ryoga. We are in search of an elven maiden who was seen around this area a day or two ago."

Auster nodded. "Come. We'll see the chief." He turned 180 degrees and walked into the trees. The others followed quietly.

On the other side of the trees, the group saw a small village filled with all sorts of races. Humans, half-orcs, and even half-elves. Auster lead them to a tent on the far end of the village and introduced them to Migat, the high chief of the bandits.

"We found them outside, near the entrance," reported Auster. Magit nodded.

"What is your business here?" he asked.

Ryoga stepped forward. He introduced himself and the rest of the group one by one. "We are searching for an elven maiden who may or may not have passed through the area within a few days. Have you or anyone in your village seen anyone unfamiliar that's passed through recently?"

Migat thought a moment. "Well, we did find some tracks leading to a vertical wall. Then, nothing. We can show you if you like." Ryoga nodded.

He brought them to almost the point of entry for the village and went through some brush. Everyone followed and found the wall he had been talking about. "This is it," said Migat.

Everyone looked up. "All right, let's do this," said Ryoga. He cast a levitation spell on himself, Cueball, Smirk, and Migat. The others scaled the wall.
